President - Dr. Phillip Bloomer
Dr. Phillip Bloomer, Ann Arbor, MI.
Dr. Phillip Bloomer is instructor of Euphonium and Tuba at Eastern Michigan University where he also teaches General Education courses in Music Theory and Music Appreciation. He holds a similar position at Adrian College, and maintains an active performing schedule as a professional tubist in Southeast Michigan. Dr. Bloomer received his Doctor of Musical Arts in Tuba Performance from the University of Michigan, and holds a MM from the University of Georgia and BMus from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Phillip is also president of his condominium association in Ann Arbor, and is the secretary of the Eastern Michigan University Federation of Teachers.
Vice President - Keith Morton
Keith Morton, Fenton, MI.
Keith Morton has served on the board for 2 years, as both Member-at-Large and Vice President. He has been playing since the age of 8, starting on cornet, then solo horn until discovering his true love - the Eb Bass. Keith, an avid brass band enthusiast, moved to the USA from the U.K. in 1996 and was excited to see the burgeoning brass band scene here. He joined in immediately, playing with Motor City Brass Band before joining Five Lakes. Keith takes every opportunity he can to introduce people to the unique and glorious sound of a Brass Band.
Secretary - Melanie Case
Melanie Case, formerly of Flint, MI; now lives in Toledo, OH.
Melanie Case has served two years as Secretary, in addition to her seven years as trombonist with the Five Lakes Silver Band. Along with her experiences on the board, she brings seven years' experience as both Assistant Director of Admissions at Kettering University and Associate Director of Admissions and Financial Aid at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. In addition, she has taught both high school and college marching bands, performed with Blast!, and taught college test preparation in both the US and Qatar. Melanie holds Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Music Education from Indiana University.
Treasurer - Doug Bayne
Doug Bayne, Rochester Hills, MI.
Doug Bayne owns Bayne Electric & Security, a full-service corporation for residential and commercial electrical contracting. Doug is a founding member of the FLSB and currently performs as Third Cornet. He has served on the board for five years. Doug also directs The Royal Brass Quintet and a 10-piece brass ensemble, and is an active freelance musician.
Music Director - Dr. Steven Kandow
Personnel Manager - Jeff Markwick
Jeff Markwick, Grosse Pointe Farms, MI.
An original member of the band, Jeff currently works as a freelance musician in SE Michigan after spending 30 years in Industrial Sales. He has been the Personnel Manager since 2007 and currently plays Flugelhorn in the band.
Member at Large - Dr. Deborah DePorre
Dr. Deborah DePorre, Bloomfield Hills, MI.
Dr. DePorre grew up in Port Huron, Michigan. In addition to her service on the Board and to the band as the Second Baritone player, she also coordinates the band's outreach activities, most recently our collaboration with Crescendo Detroit. She also founded the low brass quartet, "Brassendipity," and performs on Euphonium and Baritone in that ensemble. She earned both a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and a Bachelor of Science in Building Construction from Michigan State University. Presently retired after 30 years of private small animal practice, she also tutors English as a second language and enjoys swimming and bicycling.
Member at Large - Michael Garvey
Michael Garvey, Royal Oak, MI.
Michael Garvey is the Director of Music at Lamphere High School in Madison Heights, MI. At Lamphere, he directs a concert choir, two concert bands, a jazz band, and the State Finalist Lamphere Marching Band. He is also a co-teacher of four beginning band classes. Prior to this appointment, he served as Director of Bands at John Page Middle School, also of the Lamphere School District. In undergraduate studies, Mr. Garvey graduated with Summa Cum Laude distinction from Wayne State University, earning a Bachelor of Music Degree from the College of Fine, Performing, and Communication Arts. In 2013, he completed a Master of Music degree from the University of Michigan. Michael plays Second Cornet in the FLSB.

Board members do not have to be musicians. Music lovers and anyone with special talents are welcome. Among the positions that need assistance are: Sales, Marketing, and Logistics.
